It has decent replay value and a ton of flavor for history buffs or just people interested in history that encourages the player to do some research to understand this interesting historical period. I learned a good deal about this period from both the game and the supplemental research it inspired me to engage in. While the new mechanics don’t seem to work well with the settlement system, the inability to have settlements and regions without some limitation or another might be representative of this interesting and unstable period in the history of the Roman Empire. The focus on the mid-to-late game works well and will make for some of the largest and most interesting strategic campaigns in the Total War franchise. While Rome II has gotten better over the years, many issues remain."},{"server":"HardcoreGamer","url":"https://hardcoregamer.com/2013/09/09/review-total-war-rome-ii/54921/","date":"2013-09-09","rating":4.5,"ratingBase":5,"ratingPercent":90,"abstract":"Armed with a new engine, Rome II looks great, plays smoothly, and will be a challenge to both veterans and novices. One of the most immersive strategy games available, you can easily get swept up in the narrative you write for yourself, scrawled in the blood of barbarians from one side of Europe to the other, experiencing triumph and disaster as you seek to reenact one of history’s greatest stories. The graphics are a real treat from the realistic battlefields to the somewhat cartoonish yet engaging campaign map, while the new cinematic mode lets you experience the sights and sounds of the massive battles you command from the perspective of the individual soldier. Furthermore, the fact that it’s firmly rooted in history and military strategy means that it is downright educational so you won’t feel bad about playing it for hours on end or if your child is doing the same. I wish I could give it a perfect score, but I can’t do that until all the buttons work."},{"server":"Game Informer","url":"https://www.gameinformer.com/games/total_war_rome_ii/b/pc/archive/2013/09/04/total-war-rome-2-review.aspx","date":"2013-09-04","rating":8,"ratingBase":10,"ratingPercent":80,"abstract":"As strong as Rome II’s bid for strategy greatness is, its lack of focus and tendency toward monotony stain its gleaming banners."}],"updatedAt":"2017-11-20"}
